I just found out yesterday that Mahatma Gandhi's grandson, Dr. Arun Gandhi will spend the week of September 17-21, 2012 in Chattanooga as part of an effort to recognize a season of nonviolence. Mahatma Gandhi was famous for promoting non-violent protest in India and heavily influenced Martin Luther King and the civil rights movement here in the United States. Ironically, even though both Gandhi and King promoted non-violent forms of protest, they were both assassinated; Gandhi was assassinated in January 1948 and King in April 1968. Both of their teachings are still enormously influential and inspirational.
As part of his visit, Dr. Gandhi will visit many organizations throughout the city, including Howard School, Baylor School, Eastgate Senior Activity Center, Gardner House, and T.C. Thompson Children's Hospital. A Mayoral Proclamation will be presented at the City Council on September 18, marking Chattanooga's commitment to becoming a "Season for Nonviolence" City in January 2013. The Season of Nonviolence commitment follows closely on the heels of the Chattanooga Gang Task Force "Future is Ours" youth rally at Miller Plaza on Saturday, September 15, which is a pre-launch for the Gandhi visit.
Dr. Gandhi will be making the keynote address at the TN Women's Economic Council Summit on September 21st at the Chattanoogan. This week long event to commemorate non-violence is a very exciting one for our city and hopefully Chattanooga will continue on this path to try to reach out to the community to encourage a decrease in violence, both gang-related and non gang-related.
